About Fort Davidson, the Missouri Civil
War and the Battle of Pilot Knob
Today, the Arcadia Valley in Iron County is a peaceful setting in
one of Missouri's most scenic areas. But in 1864, the valley was the
scene of one of the largest and most hard-fought battles waged on
the state's soil - the Battle of Pilot Knob - where over 1200 soldiers
lost their lives. Fort Davidson State Historic Site
serves as a memorial to the many soldiers who gave their
lives fighting for their idea of freedom. A visitor center interprets
the battle of Maj. General Sterling Price's raid on Fort Davidson.
It features exhibits, a research library, an audiovisual presentation
and a fiber optics diorama of the battle. Nearby,
a playground and picnic area make Fort Davidson State Historic Site
an ideal place to get away to picnic and reflect about our nation’s
history. Every
3 years, a full-scale Reenactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob takes
place. Make your lodging reservations now for the Missouri
Civil War Sesquicentennial reenactments of the Battle of Pilot Knob
beginning in September 2010. Read all about the
